Green Grapes Make You Sick

“Alright, Sybil, settle down,” said Lady Penelope as she began her homeschool lesson for the day. I sat in front of the big blackboard she had in the schoolroom she made for me. The cosy scent of vanilla filled the room, and she had three different jars on the table - one of strawberry jam, one of blackcurrant jam and one of a strange green substance that I had never noticed before. “Hmmmmm…mummy, what’s that green stuff?” I asked, waving my hand in the air like an eager school student - except I wasn’t at school, I was homeschooled.

“That’s Spinach, Sybil.” replied ‘er ladyship. “You know how you always eat Spinach for dinner every night?” she asked. I nodded. Penelope gave a cheeky smile. “And you know how Parker used to dress up in different clothes and be different people to get you to eat your greens?” I giggled loudly. A cry of “I ‘eard that, milady!” could be heard from Parker from the other room. Once there was silence again, Lady Penelope continued.

She cleared her throat and said: “This glass jar of spinach represents a jar of green grape jam. Do you know why we don’t get green grape jam?” I shook my head. “Why?” I asked. “Because back when they invented jam, it definitely was not a good idea to create jam made out of green grapes, because of how revolting it tasted.” “Oooooh,” I gasped, “Tell me more!”

“Back in 1928, a group of Kansas farmers were stomping on grapes the create a new substance named jam, and some were even being used for wine. However, in some cases, one very stupid farmer was stomping green grapes, and they accidentally got turned into jam. During a test tasting, children all over the USA experienced vomiting and nausea from trying that revolting green grape jam, and parents wrote a letter saying how this new form of jam was damaging their health.

Soon, the first agents of Spectrum - that came before Captain Scarlet - came to realise that the Mysterons were forcing the farmer to make this revolting jam to poison the children of America, so they sent their most loyal agent, Captain Red, to investigate. When he looked deeper into what caused the farmer to make this disgusting substance, he discovered that the Mysterons had put Mars Prickles all over his feet, which burned whenever he walked. It hurt so much he was forced to stomp green grapes and add some worms and other revolting bugs into the mixture by Captain Black’s grandfather, Captain Blood Red, who was the first to be possesed by the Mysterons.”

“Eeeuurgh!” I cried, feeling more disgusted than I had ever been, “That’s so gross! Can’t you move on to what compares Mysteron jam with the two other jars of jam?” “I think she’s right, ma’am,” said a voice from the doorway. We both looked, and a familiar figure dressed in red was standing outside. “Captain Scarlet!” I cried, “You’ve come to join the lesson!” “Actually, of course I have,” said Captain Scarlet, “Everyone in Spectrum was making a lot of noise during a meeting about what the Mysterons possessed in America’s jam substance, so I came to join in the lesson too.” “Do take a seat, Captain,” said Lady Penelope, “And let us continue with the lesson.”

Captain Scarlet took a cushion and made himself comfortable as Lady Penelope continued. “Now Sybil, Captain Scarlet, you see those two jars there?” We both nodded in agreement. “This one holds strawberry jam, and this one holds blackcurrant jam. These jars of jam are safe to spread on toast, because they haven’t been contaminated by the Mysterons. Green grape jam isn’t safe to eat, because that’s, according to most Spectrum agents, Mysteron poison.” Captain Scarlet shot his hand up in the air.

“You have a question for me, Captain?” said Lady Penelope. “Well, ma’am, according to Colonel White I think that’s where we got the idea for our catchphrase from. Our catchphrase used to be ‘Spectrum Is Black’, but due to Captain Black being possessed by the Mysterons when I became indestructible, they renamed it to ‘Spectrum Is Green’ so we won’t promote poisoned Mysteron substances in kids.”

“Very good, Captain Scarlet,” smiled Lady Penelope, clapping politely, and I gave a wink to my friend, to which he winked back. Penelope went on, “Now, there was a scandal on Channel 4 on Halloween 2004 when they re-aired the 100 Greatest Scary Moments.” Captain Scarlet ran to hide behind the sofa, screaming loudly. He hated that special, and so did I. “Mummy!” I cried, “Would you please tone it down? Captain Scarlet is frightened!” “Oh dear, oh dearie me,” said a shocked Lady Penelope, “Very sorry, Captain.” “No worries, ma’am,” Captain Scarlet said before hiding behind the sofa again.

“Leeeet’s let him hide,” I said. “It’s quite okay for him to take some alone time, it’s no good masking.” “Does that mean it’s break time already?” I asked. “Of course, we’ll give him enough time to recover from the incident of Channel 4 on Halloween 2003.”

List It, Make It, Shake It

Yesterday, I took up the delightful task of writing lists in my notebook like Barbara Ann Kipfer once did growing up all the way through to the time when she first wrote '14,000 Things To Be Happy About'. You see, Wys - whoops, I mean, Lady Penelope - told me from Kipper's perspective that there are lots of small things to be happy about, even things that occur in my mind. My peer on the other hand told me to really immerse myself in my stories and other worlds, and whatever occurs to me the moment I see them, like Kipper for instance, and the episode 'The Swimming Pool'. Apart from the Wave Machine, there's the frog which 'vomits' out water, and the purple elephant slide.

Also today I have thought up a few new therapy methods and techniques, meaning you will never look at my ideas as stories the same way again, but rather, *in a jumpscare inducing tone* LIST ENTRIES!!!

Okay, okay, was I being too scary for you? I should stop researching Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments. Anyway, since Lady Penelope told me to really immerse myself in what I think up, I put down what I found from immersing myself in these fantasies in my lists. These are the true things to be happy about. Remember those entries in 14,000 Things, where Kipfer mentioned a rabbit named Buns and friendly aliens from Outer Space? I wonder if they predicted Learning With Pibby or the Kipper episode The Bleepers? Who knows.

But I do know that each of these worlds, whether it's Pibby, Alloy Boy, Melira or Minimon - represents a different notion or emotion. Pibby's world represents joy and positivity, Alloy Boy's world represents heroism and bravery, Melira's world represents richness and indulgence and the world of Minimon represents teamwork and perseverance. As for the horrible black substance that kills every one of the worlds we know and love...it's a symbol of negativity, meaning to me, my school years, which were sad and upsetting, brought on this black substance in my mind.

In fact, when I was asked by my therapist which world I want to live in, I said I wanted to break free from my sad, negative school years (the Glitch) and replace it with the joy and positivity found in Pibby's world, where she, Bun Bun, Ally, Buggy, Terry, Daisy and Libby all play together and have s'mores at the end of the day. A perfect life deserves a perfect world for representation.

Speaking of therapy, yesterday and today I thought up a lot of new therapy techniques. The first one required making a divided list on a piece of paper - one side tells about the things you can't do (mainly because they cost thousands of pounds) and one side is a list of things you CAN do. The second? Taking a colouring picture of a beautiful sunset sky and writing down what you can accomplish among the clouds.

And this morning, I thought up two new ones, about breaking away from your negative and upsetting school years. One is based on Netflix's popular series Wednesday, and it's where you use outlines of Wednesday and her friend Ingrid to write down what made you sad about school (Wednesday) and what made you happy about the freedom of adulthood (Ingrid). The second new one is based on a segment in Here Come The Teletubbies (or Meet The Teletubbies) and it's where you divide a piece of paper into four sections to talk about four things that made you unhappy when you were at school. On the other side of the paper, you can write down all the things in adulthood that make you a free bird, with no job, no responsibilities and lots of variety.

Now I'm not saying that either Pibby, Wednesday or the Teletubbies have anything to do with therapy at all, but hey, there's my In The Night Garden & Teletubbies method about the cycle of emotion, soooooooo....who cares? Ha ha!

Captain Scarlet's Guide To Bad Nights

Captain Scarlet has been having bad nights lately. I suppose anyone would, after finding out they were featured on Channel 4's 100 Greatest Scary Moments. There he was—Captain Scarlet, indestructible, heroic, strong—and yet now immortalised as a source of terror, frozen in time with that blank Mysteron gaze and that eerie, humming control. It wasn’t even the whole story they told. It was the moment they wanted you to remember. A frightening one. And if I’m honest, I can see how that would get under his skin, even all these years later.

I picture him lying awake, the shadows in his room playing tricks, echoes of old broadcast footage looping behind his eyelids. That strange Mysteron voice, that clipped narration, and the cutting edits from the Channel 4 documentary—I imagine they bring it all back. He’s not scared of what he was, or what he did. He’s scared of what he’s remembered as. And maybe, just maybe, there’s a small part of him that wonders if there’s still some of that blankness inside him. We all have our own late-night fears. He just happens to wear his in public.

When I can’t sleep, I think of him, sitting upright in bed, maybe rubbing his forehead or glancing at the clock. And I wonder: what would soothe a man like Captain Scarlet? Something soft. Something human. Something the Mysterons never understood. I imagine he swings his legs out from under the covers and shuffles to the kitchen, just like I do. There’s comfort in making something for yourself in the dark. He warms the milk carefully, stirs in the cocoa with a steady hand, and holds the mug close to his chest. The heat travels through his fingers like reassurance. That’s the first step—drink hot cocoa.

Then he’d return to his room, blanket across his shoulders, and reach for a book. Nothing too heavy. Maybe something he loved as a child, before Spectrum, before Mars. He reads quietly under a lamp, letting the words wrap around him like a softer kind of uniform. His muscles ease. His breathing slows. Step two—reading.

But still, the shadows linger. Not the threatening kind, just the sort that remind you you’re alone. That’s when I think he does something brave—he sings. Not for an audience, not for a mission. Just for himself. A lullaby, maybe one his mother sang to him back when he was still Paul. Maybe he sings it softly, barely above a whisper, the way I do when the night gets too loud. It helps. It always helps. That’s step three—singing a lullaby to yourself.

Finally, as he slides back under the covers, the warmth of the cocoa still in his belly, the words of the book tucked safely in his mind, and the last note of his lullaby trailing off into the dark, he picks up his headphones. He chooses an audiobook—something calm, gently narrated, maybe a classic or something with nature sounds in the background. The voice guides him, word by word, away from the static of the past. That’s step four—listening to an audiobook.

Captain Scarlet might be indestructible, but he still needs kindness. And so do I. The nights don’t always get easier, but with a little ritual, they get softer. For anyone else who's ever been haunted by how the world remembers them—or who just needs a way back to sleep—I hope you’ll try these steps. Captain Scarlet will be right there with you, drifting back to quiet.
