Pretend Play
She had been playing with her teddy for quite a while now. She was forbidden to go to school at any chance by her father, who had been fighting with her mother since she turned three. Now she was six years old, and quite untalkative due to all the shouting and screaming her parents let out. The only comfort she had in her whole life was her toys, including her very special teddy. She had him since she was born, but her father threatened to rip him to shreds if she didn’t do as she told him. That was only when her mother went out to do some shopping. Now her mother stayed home all the time, leaving the raging father to do all the work for her, and then come home and give her scars and bruises until she was too black and blue to even move from her seat.
This was inconveniently proved when the sound of glass smashing echoed from downstairs, so the girl raced to the corner of her room, dropping her teddy on the way. She curled up into a little ball and started crying. It was a terrible life, and she didn’t want to live it any longer. Just then, as if the Blue Fairy out of her Pinocchio book had been into the room and sprinkled magic on him, her teddy magically came to life, and a large hole appeared in the wall. The teddy scampered off with paddy paws into the hole. This made the girl look up, and saw the gaping hole in the blue flowery wallpaper. The girl got down on her hands and knees and saw the hole lead into some sort of secret passage. It seemed like curiosity got the best of her as she ducked down and crawled inside.
It was dark and dusty in the hole, and it looked like an extended attic, without any toys or games or picture books. The floorboards creaked as the girl crawled on them, and everything was dark. She was sure she forgot her torch, but it didn’t matter, she ate enough carrots at dinnertime to see in the dark. Suddenly, a shadow sped past. The girl jumped, scared by what she saw. When she looked back, the hole closed, so she couldn’t get back into her bedroom again. Another shadow sped past, and the girl was more terrified. Then another. And suddenly, she heard what sounded like a bear growl turning into a wolf howl. The girl was terrified, but she knew she had to keep going. She did, and her reward lay right at the very end of the passage - a blue door covered in white moons and stars. The girl was curious. I wonder where that leads to? She opened the door, and saw a bright moonlit night sky. She smiled seeing its wondrous beauty and elegant moonlit serenity.
When she went through, she found herself tumbling through the night sky, her dress becoming a parachute like when Alice fell through the rabbit hole into Wonderland. As she floated gracefully down to a field of green below, the sky darkened, and thunder roared in the air. The girl was even more terrified than ever, so she held her dress and fell faster, until she landed in the soft grass. Lightning flashed, and it began to rain. The girl was soaked. Where could she find some shelter in this dark, foreboding place? The more she looked around, the more she couldn’t find any place she needed some shelter in. Just then, she saw a cosy little cottage. It had a thatched brown roof, yellow walls and roses and honeysuckle climbing up the door.
The girl was delighted and ran up to the door. She gave it three big knocks. The door slowly creaked open, and the lights went on instantly. The girl stepped inside and wiped her feet on the doormat, but as she went in further, the door slammed shut behind her. She looked around the room. The sofas were velvet red, and all the walls were yellow. A roaring fire cosily lit up the dull, sooty fireplace, and Bambi ornaments lined up on the mantelpiece. Pictures of the countryside hung proudly on the neatly-painted walls, and a watermelon rug was laiden underneath a stool. And there, sitting on the stool, was her own teddy! The girl squealed and ran towards him, but he quickly turned around. What she saw was indescribable, for the bear had white eyes with no pupils, and seems to be crying out black ink. No teddy had ever cried out black ink before.
The bear stood up, and twisted its head round and round. It then grew long claws on its feet and hands, his teeth grew sharper, and his little muzzle turned into a snout. The girl shrank back in terror as the bear unzipped his whole body, and burst out of his shell to reveal he was a werewolf. A grey-furred, sharp-toothed werewolf which howled as the lightning flashed outside. He turned to the girl and prowled towards her, snarling, his fang dripping with saliva. The girl whimpered as the wolf prowled closer and closer…but then, he smiled. He took the little girl’s hand and lead her into the kitchen. He turned out to be a friendly werewolf, not like some of the scary ones you see in horror movies.
In the kitchen, the girl felt warm and very grateful. The kitchen was all white and red. The fridge was red, the cupboards were black and the utensils were coloured red and white too. The wolf appeared carrying a tray of chocolate cake and strawberry milkshake. The girl was delighted. She never had something to drink or eat in ages, not since her abusive father didn’t allow her any sugary snacks. When the girl tasted the cake, it tasted like a real ordinary chocolate cake. She smiled as she felt the wonderful chocolatey taste take over her mouth like an army of chocolate koalas. Once she finished the cake, she found herself becoming round and fat, almost obese. The wolf pushed the milkshake over to her, and she started drinking. However, it didn’t taste like an ordinary milkshake. It tasted all musty and horrible. The girl spat out the first mouthful, feeling it was so disgusting she could puke it all up in one go. The wolf scratched her round the face and growled at her. The wolf’s true ambitions were revealed as the girl continued to sip the revolting milkshake. As she drank, she grew thinner and thinner, until she dropped her glass onto the floor.
She began to realise her arms and legs had grown all skinny and boney from drinking the milkshake, and she started to vomit. Her vomit wasn’t green. It was all red, as if her blood had just combined with it. The wolf picked her up and carried her down a long flight of stairs…into his torture chamber. There were saws and injection needles and sharp tools everywhere. The wolf grabbed the girl in his lucid grip and slammed her down onto the hard, cold wooden table. He took some nails and a hammer and nailed her right down onto the table, until her thin arms and legs began to bleed. The girl screamed and begged for her to be set free, but the wolf didn’t listen. He searched through his instruments of torture inside his doctor’s bag, until he pulled out a massive chainsaw. He advanced towards the weak girl, weapon in paws. He pulled the cord, and moved the chainsaw towards our suffering hero…
Days passed. Back in the house, everything was quiet again. She had become a little doll sitting on the bedroom floor, while her mother decided to clear all her things away, including the wolf who had become a doll himself, to a jumble sale somewhere in town. Just while mother was away at the sale, father charged in and saw the doll. He grabbed the doll by its long, graceful curls and tore her apart limb from limb. Stuffing flew everywhere, and he even beheaded her, until she was nothing left but a pile of rags and cotton, lying upset and with one single tear falling from her button eye.
At the jumble sale, a young boy saw the wolf and decided it was the right toy for him, since he didn’t have many toys. He grew out of them since he was a toddler. His father paid for the wolf and he took him home. What he didn’t know was, like with his previous owner, he had sinister plans on his mind. Plans so sinister, you never know what he might do to him…
THE END.
