Don't These Look Yummy!

Idea Of The Day: Our Skin

Set on a nudist beach, Our Skin is a story about loving nature in nothing but your own skin, as Luke, Resus, Cleo and I are joined by their parents in loving the feeling of sand and water against our bare skin.

BEAZ!!

My support worker and I had great fun today. First, we made pizza and I enjoyed having my Mobile Data back. My pizza was in the shape of a B and I learnt a few words in German too. Next, we visited my support worker's next door neighbour to give her a slice of pizza and we met her hens and her geese. Her hens were named Hettie and Roger. We played a game with the geese where they had to bob for apples in the water, and we went into her shed which was guarded by bees. My support worker and I poked each other in the sides and yelled:
"BEAZ!!!!"
That's weirdo stuff, but I didn't mind. Also, Finn had stomach ache and kept peeing on his bedrest. What a disgusting bird he is! He doesn't mean it though, poor lad.


A Flittery Fluttery Fruit Bat

Australia is sleeping safe and sound

Lights are off and there’s snoring all round

Bingo and I asleep in bed

Resting our full up weary heads

I still have fruit bats on my mind

But now my Mum told me it’s bedtime

I try hard to rest and dream of my friends

But this fruit bat dream never ends


I wake up to see a shining light

Through the window, shining bright


I sit up and shield my eyes in disbelief

Is this spark supposed to be grief?

Without any warning, I reach the light

It feels a little hot and white

My hand burns, steam comes out

I still want to see what it all is about

So I reach out again, a bit slower this time

And you’ll never guess what happens in this rhyme…


I become a fruit bat, a flittery fluttery fruit bat

A fruit bat, and that is that

A craving for fruit, a love for the sky

A blue dot noticeable by the winking eye

I fly in the night with my brethren of bats

Over houses and garages and flats

Until I come to the sacred Daintree

The perfect place for a fruit bat like me


I grab a banana and start to eat

The bat eats with me, it can’t be beat

I eat bananas at home, this one’s even tastier

My dad says, “Bananas. They don’t go to waste here!”

I throw the skin to the floor and burp,

Pardon me, I think it was a rude word


Suddenly, I hear laughing from nearby

It was those four kids from next door, oh my!

They were hanging upside down on a nearby branch

So I went to ask them what’s up with the laughs

Sybil said “You’re no fruit bat here!”

“Yeah, you’re not a bat as you appear,”

Says Cleo, “I think you’re a useless bat,

You don’t have wings and that is that!”

“But I can fly!” I say, “It’s just a dream!”

“Of course,” says Resus, “But I think it seems

You’re a really awesome fruit bat,

You’re six years old and that is that

You can fit in with fruit bats and that’s fine,

So come and join us for a bit of flying!”


So off we flew across the sea,

Luke, Resus, Cleo, Sybil and me

We whooped and soared through the sky

As other fruit bats flew by

We saw dolphins jumping in and out

And lots of little fish splashing about

My arms were getting tired there

I still had some more to bare

Resus called out to me “Keep up!”

But still, I was one lucky pup

I had more breath and speed to go

So I just had to go with the flow


We flew into America over Grand Ridge

And down into the canyon where rivers housed fish

We flew through the canyon walls,

Screaming and yelling and calling fruit bat calls

But I was getting left behind

Luke, Resus and Cleo? Away they fly,

With Sybil flying with them free

My flying powers had gone away from me

And there I was, stuck in mid-air,

Suddenly, I fall down there!


Down and down and down I fall

Past the thick brown canyon walls,

Until I land in the river and sink

I had no thoughts left to think

As I sailed downstream in the dark of night

My eyes were heavy and not so bright

I sailed for hours in the rapid tides

Until I got washed up on the other side

I lie unconscious, a bat call in my head

As I try to return home in my mind to my bed…


But I stand in darkness before a light

A loud screech calls out through the night

Out of the darkness comes a shape

It’s not an eagle or an ape

It’s a fruit bat, huger than Dad

The hugest fruit bat I ever had

Seen in my life, my eyes filled with tears

I’ve never seen a fruit bat this big for years,

So I turn around and stretch out my hands

The bat does too, its has tinier hands

Because his arms are taken with huge wings

I am now thinking about other things…


In the morning, Mum came in my room

But I was too sleepy to wake up soon,

I was lying with my arms outstretched

And my mouth open wide like I was about to play fetch

Bingo asks, “Mum, is Bluey awake just then?”

Mum just replies, “Fruit bats again.”

You Gotta Keep Trying

Mum, I can’t launch Floppy to Space

Now that smile has been wiped off my face

I’ve tried a catapult, or a slingshot will do,

But they’re all great failures, what shall I do?


Never give up, you gotta keep trying

Stand up straight and banish your crying

We’ve got a rabbit to send into Space

Now make her part of the human race!


But how? Look, Mum, if you must know

I went to Space with Floppy a long time ago

She made a tough decision and I watched her leave

In the past, all my goals were achieved


You could shoot her up in a skyrocket

Or let her stuff planets into your pocket

You could make planets along the sidewalk

Or draw stars with yellow chalk


Oh! I know what to do,

I’ll draw a plan for Floppy too

A little tweak here, a little tweak there

Some little tweaks everywhere,

And viola! Would you believe and see

What I made for little Floppy

A rocket to launch her into Space

A trip to Mars, now that’s the case


10…9…8…7…6…5…4…3…2…1…BLAST OFF!


Wait, this machine isn’t working

Maybe a button needs inserting.

Oh wait, I get it, it’s made of cardboard,

I guess there’ll be no room for astronauts on board


I wonder what else I shall do?

I know, a rocket, Floppy, just for you!

This time I’ll use a firework’s sparks

By that time it’s getting dark!


10…9…8…7…


Ah-ah-ah!

Bingo, you mustn’t set it alight

It’s meant to go off in the night

Only grown ups should use these

They’re fireworks, they’re not pinwheel cheese!

I think I should put it back inside

Bingo, you continue playing outside


What am I to do? I can’t do it!

Can Floppy go to Space? I can’t prove it

Now Floppy and I are just lying there

Looking up at the sky so rare

Wondering what’s beyond the clouds

Pondering why we sing aloud

Finding out what we have found

Why, why, WHY?!


Bingo!


Yes, mum?


All these attempts are not your fault

You try and try but they all moult

Why don’t you use your imagination instead?

The best games come from inside your head

They don’t use fireworks or dangerous tools

You play with your toys and make up the rules

Remember the arrival of Pixar’s Lightyear?

All I know is that during its premiere

They launched a Sox soft toy among the stars

They cost thousands of pounds in thousands of money jars

But your games don’t require money or power

Instead, they just require the happiest hour!


Oh yeah! Now I know,

Off to Space Floppy and I will go!

I’ll paint a cardboard box and cut out some holes

Find a space helmet with lots of little holes

And off Floppy and I go into Space

Finding a new alien race

Looking for black holes and running across planets

As for fireworks, Mum will ban it!

I’m using my ‘magination, that’s the key

To send Floppy to Space for reality!


The sun’s going down, my game is done

I grab Floppy and inside I come

To have some milk and a cookie to chew

All I feel is there is nothing to do

I brush my teeth with Bluey by my side

And then under the covers I hide

As Mum tucks me up, safe and snug

Then I give her a bedtime hug


You will play your Space game again.

Yes, I’ll take Floppy to Space tomorrow again,

And when I go to Kindy tomorrow morning,

I’ll play it with Lila without warning

She is my best friend after all,

What are friends to pick you up when they fall?


As Mum leaves the room and switches off the light,

I close my eyes very tight

And dream the soothing, miraculous dreams

Of dark skies and moonbeams

Of Floppy and me, hopping and jumping

From star to star and leaping bumping

When I wake up, the morning has come,

It’s off to Space for everyone!
