Intense Or Not? An Alternate Writing Activity

You see that warning up there? Unusually for Disney Junior, as well as their scary programme warning, they put up that warning for one episode of The Lion Guard, named 'Long Live The Queen', because the intense themes came with a scene where Rani's mother crossed over the Rainbow Bridge.

Other shows like that may be intense too, but when it comes to storywriting, how can you compare shows and books of an intense nature with that of a delicate, kind nature? It's a sort of activity you would want to do to find out more!

You will need:
  • A notebook
  • A ballpoint pen
  • Felt tips
  • Crayons
  • A ruler
  • Some stickers
First, use the ruler to divide one page in the book into two sections: INTENSE, and GENTLE. Write down the names in your most colourful felt tips or crayons, then get onto the listing for each section. For INTENSE, think to yourself:
What kind of shows aren't my kind?
Are they overstimulating?
Do they have intense themes?
And then, move onto GENTLE. As you write down the names of the gentler inspirations, think:
Are they a form of escapism?
What makes them so gentle and low stakes?
What can I find in these shows that would make me want to do my own slice of life stories?

Once you're done, place four stickers on each corner of the next page and write down the scenes you know would fit with the GENTLE formula and cross out the ones you may think are intense but are actually helping you with your stories.

See? Easy as that. When it comes to intensity, gentleness is always the key.

And that's what I would like to see.

Ha! I rhymed!
