I Can't Sleep

On the quietest of nights inside the Creighton-Ward mansion, I tossed and turned, sniffling like a drowsy aardvark with a droopy long nose. Then, I sat up in bed, my eyes red and my nose blocked. I gently shook my mummy, Lady Penelope, awake. “Mummy…mummy, wake up.” I said through a croaky voice.

Lady Penelope awoke with a soft yawn, then she looked at me in gentle shock. “Oh dear, darling, you look awful.” “I know, I must’ve got a really bad cold overnight.” I said. “I hate it when that happens.” sighed Lady Penelope. “Don’t worry, darling, Parker’s asleep so I think I’ll get you your favourite strawberry flavoured medicine, and a nice mug of hot cocoa.”

She turned on the bedside lamp and went downstairs to the kitchen. I waited for what felt like a long time. I felt dizzy and sniffly, and all I could do was lie there, staring up at the ceiling.

To my relief, Lady Penelope eventually came back with a tray with my medicine and cocoa. She poured a spoonful of medicine and said softly, “Take this. It’ll make you feel a lot better.” I took a spoonful of the medicine. It tasted very good. Then I took the mug of hot cocoa and drank it. The taste alone washed away the somewhat ‘technotronic’ strawberry taste, even though the medicine tasted good.

Eventually, my eyes grew heavy, and I snuggled back down to sleep. Lady Penelope got into bed with me, kissed me goodnight and switched off the bedside lamp. With ‘er ladyship’s gentle breathing being the only lullaby I needed tonight, I snuggled beside Lady Penelope, feeling warm and wholesome.

As they say, mother knows best….even a beautiful mummy like ‘er ladyship.
