Sybil & Friends In: Christmas Swim - Introduction & Stone Cake
Introduction
Hello and welcome to-
“CHRISTMAS SWIIIIIIIIIIIM!”
Muffin! I’m trying to introduce things around here.
“But I wanted to liven things up.”
Alright, fine, you can introduce this collection of 13 stories along with me.
“Hooray!”
Anyway, thank you for taking your time to read this - I hope you enjoy the 13 stories that are present in this book. And just in time, too.
“If it’s Chwistmas, then I’m lucky you picked it up! LET THE READING BEGIN!”
Yes, let the reading begin.
Stone Cake
(Based on a true story)
One cold, dark day in December, Luke, Resus, Cleo, Bluey, Bingo, Vince and I all made our way to see my friend Helen, who lives just down the street. Helen is a red dog with brown, curly ‘80s-styled hair and funky pink glasses. Her husband, Graham, is a grey old dog who always wears his ‘World’s Best Chef’ apron day in day out. In fact, he looks just like Bluey’s Grandpa Bob when you think about it.
They have a tiger called George, who always tries to scratch at the kitchen door to let Helen give him a big tin of tiger food. He always loves his food, especially his Tiger Snacks! Their kids are called Molly, Leeland, Toby and Lily - they all have different tastes, but Molly is into things like iCarly, Monster High and Gabby’s Dollhouse now. Sometimes she has the inseparable duo of Spike the dragon and Pandy Paws over to play, because they know her very well.
And the best part? Helen has EVERYTHING! She has a hot tub outside on the patio. She has a kitchen full of food, including a breakfast cupboard full of cereals and spreads, a cotton candy machine, a waffle maker and a Slush Puppy machine. Her kids also have a lot of toys too, making me wish I was lucky enough to have such a glam life. In the cupboards also she has lots of Disney mugs - Doc McStuffins, Disney Princess, Marvel’s Avengers, Sofia The First and of course her Little Miss Chatterbox and Little Miss Sunshine mugs, which we use to drink cocoa from. Helen is a good cook - she makes the best cakes in town, the best drinks, the best popcorn, the best you name it. You ask for it, she’ll make it.
“Do you think your kids will be home today?” I asked as we pulled up outside Helen’s house. “Nah, I don’t think so. They’ve gone to their local Enlightening Kids session.” “What’s Enlightening Kids?” asked Bluey. “Something the local church organises for specially gifted kids. They gave Molly a kite last Summer as part of the annual kite bazaar.” explained Helen. “Wow!” gasped Bluey. “I bet we can set up a kite sale at home.” “Dad says we’re too young,” said Bingo, “My personal opinion is-” “No time for talking,” said Helen. “Let’s go in and bake!” “Hooray!” we all shouted. “Ditto!” shouted Vince, and we all glared at him with the most evil expressions ever seen by man ever.
When we went into Helen’s house, the first thing that greeted us was George bouncing up to us. He was sniffing all around us, hoping that he could detect the scent of a dog. And he did - the scent of a dog called Bluey. And one called Vince. Bluey giggled, but Vince just sat there, his ear twitching. “Down, George, down!” called Helen. George sat and gave the adorable anime-style face he always gave when he wanted attention. “Don’t mind George,” she said, “He’s feeling extra bouncy and sniffy today.” “Well at least he didn’t sniff my bandages, or grab them. I’ve just had them cleaned yesterday.” remarked Cleo. “Well, step into the kitchen.” said Helen, so we all followed her.
The kitchen had cupboards all around. At one end of the room was a large table with ice cream placeholders on it. On the other end of the room, there were lots of cupboards housing the food and mugs I just told you about. “Now, who wants a nice mug of cocoa?” “Me! Me! Me!” we all shouted. “I do!” I called. “Okay, let me get them ready for you guys. Once you’ve drunk them, you may help me with baking the chocolate cake you’ve designed. Do you have the design, Sybil?” “Yep,” I said, and I presented the drawing to Helen.
It was a two tier chocolate cake with pink icing on the first tier, and yellow icing with a black smiley face on it, and a plastic toy version of Simba on top. “I made it myself,” impersonated Resus, and we all began to laugh. Outside, George growled and scratched the door. “Okay, we’ll keep it in a safe place so none of you will knock it over. In the meantime, you can sit and enjoy your cocoa. It shan’t be long, the kettle just boiled.”
While we were waiting for our cocoa, we were just like men at a pub waiting for their drinks, chatting merrily about what they’re going to do this Christmas. “I’m going to spend another Christmas at Uncle Stripe’s house!” said Bluey. “Remember the last time I had Bartlebee for Christmas? He’s part of the family now.” “Well, Luke, Resus and Cleo are a part of my family, Bluey.” I high fived Luke. “And to make things better, I think spending time with your sister is the best thing of all.” Bingo gave a sassy pose and face and laughed, “You shouldn’t have.” “What about Vince? Isn’t he going to spend Christmas with Rex The Runt and his companions too?” asked Luke. Vince didn’t respond. He was eating something.
We were all concerned for a minute. But when I looked closer, he was eating my cake design sheet! “VINCE!!” I shouted. “Drop it! Drop it NOW!” So Vince did spit it out, and all that was left of the cake design sheet were some slobbery paper bits and faded colour. “Oh my god…” I whined, hiding my face in my hands. “What’s all the hullabaloo about?” asked Helen as she brought us our cocoa. “It’s Vince, he ate up my cake design.” I wept. “That’s naughty,” said Helen, “It’s Sybil’s cake design! Are you going to say sorry to Sybil?” Vince had no time to think. He just said, “TUESDAYS!” “That’s it. Out you go!” cried Helen. “No, Helen, no!” whined Bingo. “Yes!” cried Helen. “He’s going out until he’s learnt to behave.”
Helen sent Vince out into the garden, near the hot tub. He was upset and very sorry for himself. As we drank our cocoa back indoors, I asked Luke, “Do you think Vince will be alright out there?” “Alright? Ah, prrrrffff, he hasn’t gone and married a hoover for nothing.” “How can someone marry a hoover?” asked Bingo. “Easy, they invite her to do you know what with him, they see a ballet show, then they marry and then they have kids! End of story.” said Resus. “Vince might freeze to death!” I worried, “It’s cold and dark out there.” “Don’t be silly, Sybil,” said Bluey, “Us dogs are warm blooded so they get through the cold weather easily. Take the husky, they are warm blooded and can get through Winter weather.”
But outside, unbeknownst to us, Vince had discovered Helen’s hot tub. Time for a party, he thought as he lifted off the covers to reveal the water. And who cares if I’m plasticine or not, I’ll enjoy the turb anyway.
Meanwhile, back indoors, we were helping Helen make a chocolate yule log. We put in butter, eggs and flour, but the best part was cracking the eggs. We had to put in every single egg from the pack into a whisking jug and mix it all together until it was yellow and sticky - just how the hens agreed to do it. By the way, did someone mention something about going vegan being the highlight of the times we’re in? LOL!
Meanwhile, outside, Vince had turned on the bubbles and the colourful disco lights that accompanied the hot tub, and jumped in. The water was lovely and warm - just how this mentally unstable dog liked it. Then he decided he could invite a few friends - friends apart from Rex The Runt, Bad Bob and Wendy - around to enjoy the turb, so he got out his cell phone and began dialling the number of White Trisha.
Back inside we were excited when the mixer began to combine the ingredients together to create a nice chocolatey pool of edible batter. Bluey and Bingo shook their bodies and made funny noises. “Ah, who cares, let’s join in anyway!” I cried, and we all began shaking and making funny noises. Helen even put on some ‘50s jive music so we can dance like no one’s watching. It was great fun!
Meanwhile, outside, Vince had invited a whole host of female dogs to come and enjoy the hot tub with him - even Chippy and Cherry, who wanted to get into the tub with Vince because they knew hot turbs are for lurve. While two poodles stroked Vince’s twitching ears, Chippy and Cherry began making out, and some lady dogs began to relax.
Back inside, we were licking the batter off the spoon and the whisk as Helen popped the mixture into the round cake tin and shoved it into the oven. We had chocolate all round our mouths as Bingo remarked, “Batter licking!” She spat chocolate everywhere from saying that, including on Resus, who cried, “Get it off, get it off!” How we all laughed….except me. “That’s just what Vince would say. Shame he’s forced to spend all the time outside. I wonder what he’s doing right now?”

Softness Of The Sea - Chapters 1 & 2
Chapter 1:
Finding Home
In the middle of nowhere, far away from your home country, there is a beautiful island. It has lush green forests, peaceful surroundings and, the highlight of the island, a beautiful beach. On this beach lived, by himself, a little Trollan wizard called Orko. He was the only one there since there were no other people living on this island - except for animals like jaguars, toucans and sloths.
Orko loved his life outside in the open, and he couldn’t ask for anything more. Every day, he would float across the beach, admiring what the day brought. He would lie on the sand and watch seagulls circle overhead, or clouds float like giant fluffy carpets over the beach, casting gargantuan shadows over his environment. He slept in a comfy bed of palm leaves in a large cave just near the beach - he couldn’t ask for a better bed. When it was nap time or bedtime, he would snuggle into the leaves and close his eyes. For it was a place where he was free to dream.
He would climb up onto rocks on the cliffs above the beach and let the wind blow his soft, velvety cloak. He would sometimes let the waves splash him if he floated near to the edge of the cliff. The sea was the most important part of Orko’s life there. He would ‘dive’ from rocks and into the deep, inviting water, where he would swim with dolphins and turtles with large shells, look at the ocean’s bed and relax on the top of the water. His ancestors have embraced the ocean for as long as they could remember, and Orko held onto the tradition in his own smooth blue hands. He was in harmony with the ocean. He believed in it and all the creatures that lived there. When he wanted to get dry he would lie in the sand and bask in the warm sun. It was a beautiful day.
However, there was one thing missing from Orko’s life - someone he could share his findings with, his discoveries and happiness. Whenever he felt lonely, he would draw himself on the sand, alongside another Trollan who would be his friend for life. A female Trollan, perhaps, since he was the only Trollan everyone knew.
At night, he lay awake, looking up at the ceiling of the cave, feeling really lonely and empty inside. That particular night, he got out of his cave and went onto the sand to draw himself and the Trollan he desired to be with. When he stared at the Trollan drawn on the sand, he sighed and lay down beside it, feeling like he was the only person who ever existed on Earth.
Suddenly, he heard what sounded like a baby crying. Curiously, he decided to follow the noise. In the distance, he could see a Moses basket washed up on the beach. “Hmmmm…what’s inside?” he asked. He decided to go towards the basket and look in to see. At first he felt very nervous about the crying thing hidden under the blanket, but upon uncovering the blanket, he saw not a Trollan, but something he could not believe.
It was a baby lioness cub, with soft golden fur and little paddy paws. The lioness stopped crying and looked up at the wizard, who stared at her with his mustard yellow eyes. Orko picked up the baby gently and began to cradle her in his arms. At once, the baby began to smile again and snuggle into his chest. Orko felt really warm and at peace with his new friend. “You’re so soft and pretty…” he smiled under his shadowed face. “But what can I name you?” He thought for a moment. Then he had it. “Furaha! It’s a Trollan name for ‘beach child’. Well, I think you’re going to like having me to protect you since you’re washed up on this beach.”
Suddenly, the baby began crying again. Furaha was hungry. “Aaaaaawwww, is baby feeling famished? I know, you can’t eat solid foods yet. Here, let’s find you a shell.” Orko took Furaha all the way to a large pink conch shell which was cleaned out and stuck in the sand. Orko put Furaha onto the ground and brought the shell closer to him. He opened up his sleeve and produced a waterfall of fresh milk from it. It poured like tea from a teapot straight into the shell, then Orko picked up Furaha and said shell. “Go ahead,” he said softly as the baby stopped crying, “Drink up.” Furaha didn’t hesitate. Instantly and slowly she drank the milk bit by bit. “Aaaaawww…” sighed Orko. His heart got warmer and warmer with each sip Furaha took.
At last, feeling full, Furaha yawned and snuggled into Orko’s arms once again. Orko himself felt tired too. The sun was rising in the distance as Orko said to the young cub: “Let’s get you into my cave. I expect you’re tired after your long journey.” Orko took the baby into his cave and settled with her in his arms on his soft, leafy bed. Orko used his magic to conjure up a snuggly blanket big enough for the two of them, and soon both of them were fast asleep deep into the morning, exhausted from their eventful night. Orko had found a friend, and the baby had found someone who could take care of her - a new brother, just for her.
Chapter 2:
Rockpools
Three days later, Furaha had steadily grown adjusted to life with Orko. He took Furaha out of the cave one morning to look at the rockpools near the water. Orko took Furaha to the hugest rockpool, which was his favourite out of all the rockpools he encountered before adopting Furaha. “Look, Furaha,” whispered Orko, pointing to an orange star shape in the water. “That’s a little starfish.” A big starfish, you mean, thought Furaha as she watched it slime across the depths of the pool.
Orko looked at the tallest, hugest rock nearby. “I don’t want to let you climb up there,” warned Orko, “It’s really too high up. Tell you what, I think I’ll play a game with you.” He placed Furaha onto the sand, the rocks surrounding it huge and smooth, and then he floated off behind the rocks. Furaha saw a hermit crab scuttle past her, and swiped at it, causing it to tuttle off. Suddenly, she heard Orko call out in a cheeky way: “Oh Fura-haaaa! Come and find me!” Furaha looked around, and felt a giggle coming on. Orko’s hand poked out from behind the rock, and he said, “Yoohoo!” Furaha first started to giggle quietly. Then Orko peered out from behind each and every rock, calling out peekaboo style phrases to Furaha, who laughed until she couldn’t take any more.
Suddenly, she looked up. In the light of the sun, seagulls scattered in all directions as Orko sat on the tall rock he forbade Furaha from climbing earlier and called down, “I am king of the seagulls! Just you wait until I show you how I can fly!” At once, Orko leapt off the rocks and began circling around baby Furaha, who clapped her paws in glee. Orko began squawking like a seagull as he circled, then he swooped down and grabbed his baby sister. Both of them flew across the beach, Furaha squealing in delight as Orko floated over the entire beach. He threw Furaha up into the sky and caught her again when she fell back down.
Orko couldn’t ‘bare the weight of Furaha’ anymore and fell onto the sand, straight onto his back. Both of them were laughing and squealing in delight as Furaha hugged Orko and gave him a cute little kiss. For the first time ever, Orko felt…loved. “Furaha, I love you so much.” he sighed, and hugged his baby sister softly.
Wandering along the beach, Furaha couldn’t be happier with Orko carrying her on his shoulders as they explored the whole beach together. They had wandered towards a giant archway formed by the forces of nature between two cliffs. “Ooooh,” gasped Orko, “Look at that.” Furaha was amazed! She had never seen anything like that before. Neither had Orko…okay, he had seen it before, but that was a different story.
“Okay, Furaha, hold on tight.” giggled Orko cheekily. He floated very quickly past the arch. Furaha began screaming in joy as Orko screeched to a halt. The two laughed and laughed. “Again?!” teased Orko, and once Furaha nodded, he did it again. “Wheeeeeeeeeeee!!” he cried. Furaha laughed loudly as he went under the archway and emerged, laughing along with her.
Minutes later, Furaha and Orko were lying together on the sand, looking up at the beautiful sky. They were back at the beach near Orko’s cave, where it was safe. “Aaaaaahhhhh…” sighed Orko. “Of all the fun I had, I’m glad I could share it with you. You know, it’s a pity there are no other Trollans on this beach. I’m lucky to have only you by my side.” Orko picked up Furaha and hugged her gently. Furaha felt warm and very grateful. “I think we’ve had enough fun for today. Let’s stop now and rest.”
Furaha and Orko snuggled together on the sand and fell fast asleep, knowing there’ll be better days waiting for them in the future.

Furaha & Orko's Nature Adventure - Chapters 1 & 2
Chapter 1:
The Sunset
Darkness shrouded the forest like an ocean wave that has been polluted for millions of years. The trees were bare with no leaves. Their branches creaked and groaned, as if a thousand men were experiencing the pain of battling to open an impossibly heavy door. In the background, cries and screeches of owls and ravens were the only music that filled the air.
Through the black, unilluminated terror, two small figures made their way along the forest, trying to find a way out. Around them, beams of light shone through the trees, as if screaming to be let out from their cataclysmic prison. Those figures wandering are Furaha, a lioness cub, and Orko, her wizard friend. Orko is feeling nervous, the poor fellow, because it’s his first time basking in nature. He’s fond of tending gardens, but not on Eternia. His former master, King Randor, forced him to do it as an act of helpfulness, but with every time he refused, he was whipped without any remorse.
WHIP!
CRACK!
“AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!”
But those things were all forgotten about just now. The light had been turned off on this cruel event, and turned back on to reveal this very story which you are reading right now. Furaha, his partner in crime, is trying her best to comfort him. Orko feels anxious - he’d never been in a forest this dark before.
“It’s okay, Orko,” reassured Furaha, “Look! There are no beastly buggy things around there.” “There might be,” shuddered Orko, “I think there’ll be monsters everywhere I turn - with swords and bum bags and blonde hair and muscles, just waiting to punish me.” “There’s no such thing as monsters with muscles,” said Furaha, “Not even one called He Man.” “URGH!” Orko shuddered. “Don’t you dare mention He Man, his sword goes right through my heart in my mind as I mention his name.” “I mean he’s not here right now. He’s on Eternia.”
“Then what about bears, or wolves, or bats?” asked Orko. “Well,” explained Furaha, “Bears usually defend themselves against hunters when they’re protecting their young from their big, sharp wooden spears. I heard from my friend Mickey a story about a boy who got transformed into a bear as punishment for killing one. This bear was a symbol of the fact of life. He also mentioned two moose who played a vital role on his journey, and a bear cub who was adorable but looking for a fight.”
Furaha leapt up onto her hind paws and jumped up and down in little jumps, boxing the air with her bijou furry fists. “Come on, Orko. Fight! You wanna look for a fight? Get me now!” At last delighted, Orko unrolled his sleeves and both of them pretended to fight together. Furaha jumped out of the way just as Orko was about to punch her, just like that he got dizzy and fell over. He began laughing and laughing and laughing. Furaha began laughing as well.
Once the laughter had died down, Furaha helped Orko up and told him, “You’re really starting to be brave in this spooky old forest, dear heart. No need to worry about bats, they like to flutter around like butterflies looking for a nice juicy fruit to nibble instead of a nice juicy neck to suck red crimson liquid from.” Orko sighed in relief. Bats weren’t at all blood suckers after all. “And wolves,” Furaha went on, “Are really noisy. They like to howl a lot! AWWWWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”
Orko took a deep breath and tried howling himself. “Ar-ar-AROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!” Orko and Furaha had a great time howling and making spooky noises in the dark forest. All around them, field mice scrambled into their underground homes. Foxes darted into their burrows and badgers dug the ground frantically, looking for a place to hide. Furaha and Orko howled louder than they could possibly howl, until…silence.
Afterwards, much to their horror, a loud screeching noise echoed through the dark forest. Furaha and Orko screamed in horror! Orko leapt onto Furaha’s back and held onto his hat as the young lioness cub galloped across the forest and the noise turned up its emotively ear-splitting volume. Furaha and Orko have got to find a way out of here! “Faster, Furaha, FASTER!” shouted Orko. “I’m trying! We need to find a way out of here!”
At last, Furaha saw a beam of light shining through a gap in the trees. A wide gap which lead out into the sunlight. “A light!” shouted Furaha. “Hold on, Orko!” Furaha ran headfirst into the light as Orko screamed in fear. At first, they were blinded by a 2 second flash of white!
Then, when it settled, Furaha and Orko stepped out of the light and into the most arresting part of nature ever seen by the human eye. The sky was coloured pink to mark the first sunset of the month. The ground was carpeted in soft green grass and colourfully-scented wild flowers, and the sun set just over a huge hill nearby. “We did it, Orko.” sighed Furaha, “We’ve made it to this beautiful place.” Orko at once felt calm and collected again as he looked around at his beautiful surroundings. He sniffed. The beautiful scent of a Spring breeze filled his unforeseen nose. “Mmmmmmm…” sighed Orko. He floated in the air, spinning slowly, then he fell on his back in the grass and sighed.
Furaha lay down beside him and watched the sky darken. She yawned gingerly, and Orko’s eyes were dry and cold, so he had to rub them and yawn too. “We’ve been wandering through this forest for days and days.” she said softly, “but now that we’ve found a way out, we can finally be at peace with ourselves.” There was a lengthy moment of silence, before Orko asked Furaha, “Do you know why us Trollans are into nature?”
But Furaha was already asleep. Orko felt sleepy too, and soon they were both snoring as the sky turned from a beautiful pale pink to a deep, dark black. Unbeknownst to them, a deep, groaning roar pierced the blackness….
Chapter 2:
Dinosaur Footprints
When Furaha and Orko woke up the next morning, Furaha discovered some chicken-like footprints on the ground. She gently shook Orko awake and pointed in her direction at the giant footprints. “Do you think these look like giant chicken footprints?” “I don’t see any giant chickens around here.” said a confused Orko, who scratched his ears in thought. “No, it must be something else then.” “Something else? Are you sure it’s not…a monster?” “It won’t be. I’m going to find out. Come on, Orko.”
So off they went, following the footprints across the meadow, this way and that, until they came to a line. The line crossed over to a huge desert, and in the distance were towering volcanoes the size of skyscrapers. “Oh my good gravy guts…” gasped Furaha. “Trolly Molly…” breathed Orko. They had never seen anything like it. “Well, I suppose this rift allows us to travel back in time to when dinosaurs existed, I presume.” guessed Furaha. “Mind if we go through it?” “I’m sure we can,” said Orko. “Let’s do it!”
So Furaha jumped over the line, and gestured for Orko to do the same. Once he did, the whole meadow disappeared behind them. They had travelled back in time to the prehistoric ages! At first, our two friends didn’t know there were dinosaurs in this era, until they heard a loud roar. A huge, green diplodocus stomped its way past the two friends, who scampered to safety. Just when they thought they were safe, a triceratops thundered by and charged into another of its kind. “RUN!” cried Furaha and grabbed Orko’s hand, taking him across the valley and into a large hole.
When they opened their eyes, they found themselves in darkness. The sound of dripping water echoed in the shadows as Orko pulled a wicker candle out of his sleeve and lit a match. Once he lit it, he and Furaha got the biggest surprise of their life: there, before them, was a huge black tadpole with four legs, wanting to eat them for his supper! The two friends screamed and popped out of the hole, running across this terrifying world of prehistoric giants while trying not to get separated from one another.
