It was a cold, dark night in December. The snow was falling gently around the Creighton-Ward mansion, and Lady Penelope was fast asleep with her baby (me) by her side. However, when she reached out to take my tiny hand, her eyes flew open with astonishment. I felt very, very cold. I was even shivering and whimpering in fear, because I was as chilly as a penguin on a desert island.
“Oh, oh….is my baby darling all cold?” asked Penelope softly. “Don’t worry, little one, there’s no hurry. I’ll make you all better again.” She took a soft, fluffy blanket from the drawer and wrapped it around me just tight enough to make me warm and comfortable, then she took me in her arms and cradled me softly in the Winter silence. “The Winter chill won’t nip at you now, darling,” whispered Penelope softly. “I’m here, I’m here…sssshhhhhh, ssssshhhhhhh, it’s okay, I’m here.”
Penelope cradled me in my arms softly and surely, whispering reassuring words in my ear as the soft sound of Parker’s snoring came from the other room. She was keeping me safe and warm, protected from the Winter chill. The more reassuring words she gave me, the more comfortable I felt.
At last, she settled me down next to her and lay on her soft, comfortable bed once again. She kissed me goodnight and whispered, “May the cold ne’er harm you tonight, my child.” She yawned a soft, gentle yawn and snuggled right down to sleep, knowing in the full point that I was safe and warm, protected from the cold air outside.
Hopefully tomorrow, Parker will sort out the heating so we can be warm and safe all night long - things like that are so expensive these days.
