Crocodile Cards

Deep in the swamps of Landundee, there lived two crocodiles named Andrew and Scazar. All they ever did in their dull swamp home was sit there in the murky water looking bored with nothing to do. They just had nothing exciting in all their lives. All they ever got to do was eat swamp gunge soup for dinner and play endless dull games of SwampBall. Now, all they ever did was sit, sit, sit, looking bored, bored, bored. It’s no fun being a crocodile.

One day, Andrew noticed something in the distance. It was the town. “Come on, Scazar,” he said, “Let’s get a job there and escape the boring old mess!” “But what about if there are any predators around here?” asked Scazar. “Don’t worry, I’m sure they can accept new jobs there!” laughed Andrew. “Oh. Then maybe I guess I’ll like my new job.” said the always-nervous Scazar. “You’ll love it once you go around human beings!” laughed Andrew. “We don’t bite around humans - oh well, just in case they call pest control.”

So they crawled out of the murky brown water and marched two by two into the town. At first, all the people in the town didn’t notice, because they were too busy going about their daily lives. Andrew and Scazar wanted to find a job - and fast! They saw two signs in the distance: “WANTED! Hiring new teachers for school job.” near the school, and “Hiring new owner of local butcher’s shop - come and get your gullety fill here.” “I’ll take a job at the butcher’s,” said Andrew. “I’ll take a job at the school,” said Scazar.

In a few moments, Andrew got a job at the butcher’s. He did a good job selling meat to the customers who came in, but he couldn’t take his eyes off the sausage strings that were hanging off the hook. He couldn’t resist, so he grabbed the sausages and chowed on them, loving the taste of raw meat. Raw meat was better than human meat, because it didn’t taste bitter. However, it wasn’t long before he was fired by the angry manager of the butcher’s shop, who thought his teeth were too sharp and his appetite too huge for a job like this.

Meanwhile, Scazar got a job at the school as a teacher. The children were amazed to see a crocodile in a professor’s hat teaching science and maths and social studies. When he was asking a question, however, he showed rows and rows of sharp white teeth. The children thought his teeth were too sharp and scary, and ran out of the classroom screaming. The head of the school had to fire him too, because his looks were too frightening for all the pupils.

When Andrew and Scazar met up in the village square, everyone was screaming and running for their lives, back into their houses or someplace bizarre in the street. “See? This is what I’m talking about,” said Scazar, “No one loves us!” “I guess we’ll have to go back to our boring old lives in our boring old swamp, with no way home or whatev-” “Not yet! Look!” called Scazar. Before them, on a table outside of a cafe, was a pack of playing cards left behind by a frightened man in a coat and a bowler hat. This gave Andrew and Scazar an idea.

Soon, they were back in their swamp playing a game of snap on the deck. “Snap! I win!” called Andrew, putting his card down in front of Scazar’s. “Oh, you win again.” said Scazar. “It’s fun to not be bored!” “Yeah, even if you’re alligators living in a murky, boring swamp!” said Andrew. Soon, the other crocodiles wanted to play too, and soon, a casino was opened up on the edge of the swamp, where the crocodiles could play snap whenever they wanted. Life was now as sweet as scales.

THE END.
